The foundation: training and master optician's examination
Erich Hartmann's professional journey began with his apprenticeship at the long-established Austrian company Wutscher. There, he learned the optician's craft from the ground up and developed an early sense for precision, quality, and personalized customer advice.
In 1978, he successfully passed his master optician's examination – a significant milestone that opened doors for his further professional development.
Subsequently, he gained valuable experience at Rodenstock. There, he acquired in-depth insights into the production of eyeglass lenses and learned the technical intricacies of modern lens manufacturing. This knowledge of material properties, production processes, and optical precision perfectly complemented his craftsmanship.
Going independent – 1980 in the 1st district
In 1980, Erich Hartmann took the plunge and went into business for himself. He opened a small shop in Vienna's 1st district – with a grand vision.
What made it special: the premises had originally been a comb maker's, where high-quality horn combs were made. The previous owner introduced Erich Hartmann to the art of horn working.
What initially seemed like a coincidence became a pivotal inspiration.
The creation of our own horn eyewear collection
Fascinated by the unique properties of the natural material, Erich Hartmann taught himself how to make horn eyewear. With great patience, a love of experimentation, and artisanal ambition, he developed his own technique and, ultimately, his very own horn eyewear collection.
Horn is lightweight, gentle on the skin, and unique in its grain and play of color – so every frame is one of a kind.
What began as an artisanal experiment evolved into a globally renowned and valued collection. Today, Hartmann Wien's horn eyewear stands for:

Growth and modernization: the major renovation of 2017
In 2017, another significant milestone was reached in the company's history: The business premises were extensively expanded and modernized, a project undertaken together with his daughter, Veronika Hartmann.
The sales and workshop area expanded to an impressive 365 m². The renovation seamlessly blended tradition with modern architecture, creating ample space for the workshop, consultations, presentations, and an international clientele, all while preserving its family atmosphere.
Generational change: the future in new hands
Since 2021, Hartmann Wien has been led by the second generation. Veronika Hartmann took over the management of the family business, continuing her father's philosophy with a fresh perspective, innovative spirit, and meticulous attention to detail.
